When a water heater goes on Long Island it is usually a Saturday and usually in January. Most standard tank replacements we do are finished in a morning — we carry common sizes on the truck and we haul the old unit away.

Expect roughly $1,800 to $3,000 installed for a standard 40 or 50 gallon gas tank in this area, depending on size, venting and whether the code work around it has been done. We quote flat, before we start, and the quote is what you pay.

Tankless is a bigger conversation and we will not pretend otherwise. It usually needs a gas line upsized and new venting cut through the wall, which is why the honest range runs well past a tank swap. It is worth it in a house with three bathrooms running at once. It is often not worth it in a two-bedroom ranch with one shower.

If yours is over ten years old and the bottom is weeping, do not wait for the flood. A slow rusty seep at the base is a tank telling you it is going to let go, and it will pick its moment.
